The World Bicycle Relief team have just achieved a major milestone: the 1,000,000th Buffalo Bicycle has just rolled off the production line! Read on to find out more about their work and how a carefully designed bicycle can change someone’s life…
Who are World Bicycle Relief?
For almost 1 billion people living in rural locations around the world, distance presents a huge barrier. People have to travel miles on foot every single day to survive. And that makes accessing education, healthcare and economic opportunities incredibly difficult. World Bicycle Relief are a non-profit social enterprise who partner with communities to change that, through bicycles. Recognising that long term, sustainable transport options are key, WBR have developed the Buffalo Bicycle. This bike is specially designed to be able to carry heavy loads over long distances across rugged terrain and locally assembled. These bikes are simple to maintain, easy to repair and local shops in the communities can supply spare parts to keep communities moving.
Providing access to reliable transportation helps more people to access education, healthcare, jobs and economic opportunities. WBR take a sustainable, community-focused approach to help break the poverty cycle.
1,000,000 bikes: what’s the impact?
Founded in 2005, World Bicycle Relief are celebrating 20 years (and counting) of changing lives through bicycles. So far, over 4 million people have been impacted positively through WBR’s initiatives. Their 2024 impact report found that by improving access to transportation, there’s been a 28% decrease in students missing out on education, a 63% increase in households being served by health workers and 53% of business owners have seen an increase in revenue. All through bicycle mobility!
On 3 February 2026, WBR announced another important milestone: their 1,000,000th Buffalo Bicycle has rolled off the production line. WBR have stated that on average, one bike touches five lives. With one million and counting, that’s a huge potential impact.
