ABOUT KASANJE CYCLING
Kasanje Cycling is a project run by Sam Mutton and Rafael Otim as part of their work with the Musizi Joy Foundation – an NGO working in Kampala, Uganda with a focus on community development projects that empower and provide for women, children and young people in deprived communities.
Kasanje Cycling has worked to build the Kasanje Bike Park – a free to use bike park which is the first of its kind in Uganda. The bike park provides a vital free and safe space for more people in the community to be able to enjoy cycling – something which is key to help to grow grassroots cycling in Uganda. Currently, the bike park has 25 children’s bikes and helmets which are free to use at any time. Kasanje have also been working with Pump for Peace to build Uganda’s first ever asphalt pump track. Strong progress has been made and the track will be opening soon. Not only will this provide a fantastic place for children and local cyclists to develop their skills, there is also an agreement in place to host Uganda’s first ever MTB National Championships later this year.

Alongside this important development of grassroots cycling, Kasanje Cycling are also playing a key role in identifying talented riders and creating more opportunities for elite level cycling in Uganda. Through the project, Sam has helped to coach Masaka Cycling Club. This has seen them rise to the top 50 teams on Zwift and 3 of the team were rewarded with professional contracts -including the first female rider to become pro in the country. More recently some of these riders competed in the African Continental Championships, representing Uganda, at an international level.
Wahoo RGT are now supporting Kasanje Cycling, enhancing the project’s capabilities to grow their development team and to identify new talent. With Wahoo’s support, they have now been able to establish a high quality indoor training facility, allowing up to 8 athletes to be coached at any given time. This has supported the progression of a talent identification programme to develop more top level Ugandan cyclists.
After huge achievements last season, moving forward Kasanje Cycling are looking to further establish this high quality development team. Doing so will give opportunities to talented riders who have not yet had the chance to compete internationally. The team will focus on developing these individuals with a holistic approach, so they are equipped with the skills to succeed – both on and off the bike. The longer term vision for 2024 is to create a formal programme which gives elite riders in Uganda a professional contract and platform to showcase their talent. They intend to target numerous pro-am events in Europe and also participate in more formal UCI run events on the African Continent.
Here at Stolen Goat, our mission is to help to inspire and empower more people to Find Their Freedom through sport. So as you can imagine, Kasanje Cycling is an adventure that truly resonates with us! We’re delighted to have worked with Kasanje Cycling on a special collaboration cycling kit design, the sales of which will to help to raise funds for the bike park and cycling projects. This is a seriously cool kit collaboration, that not only looks great – but can also help to do a lot of good. The funds raised from the sales of the collection will be reinvested in training mechanics, better equipping trail builders and supporting the next generation of potential professional cyclists to achieve their potential.
