Meet Sam Farrar // A Brand Ambassador For 2017 // Find Out What He’s About

An opportunity for an opportunist – Sam Farrar

When I left college I got a job as a shelf stacker in my local Co-op. 6 years on I’m a Technician working for a well-known family-run business, Atherton Racing, better known as Trek Factory Racing DH team. Yep, that’s right: I travel the world as a bicycle mechanic fixing bikes for a World Cup DH race team. The dream!

I still struggle to grasp the fact that I get paid to travel the World Cup circuit. I would have never believed that I would ever have this opportunity. It all came about so quickly! In short, I wasn’t even looking for a new job, I was happy working at Cyclewise bike shop when I was tipped off that there was a job opening as a mechanic for Trek Factory Racing. I was on the fence for a while, weighing up my options. On one hand, I had a great job, lived in the Lake District where (if you’ve ever been you’ll know) the riding is world class. I was close to my family and friends, the ‘northern lifestyle’ very much suited me, too. On the other hand, I had an opportunity that I would remember for the rest of my life: I could go to new places and experience them. I would go racing, without the added pressure of actually racing! Meet new people and ride in new places. So, after a few interviews, I was welcomed on board Trek Factory DH.

I’m a real believer in making the most out of an opportunity, so I’m treating this season as one big adventure, with it lots of mini-adventures within it. I have learned so much this season already, and I hope it continues. So far this season has been a whirlwind and I’ve done loads of things I would have never done before. I spent 6 days travelling in a HGV, which was an experience in itself. Rach won the first round of the World Cup. Gee broke himself, and I’ve found a new love for black pudding and honey.

I will keep you up to date with what’s going on on my big adventure, so remember to check back here and on my Instagram page (sam_theo) for updates.
