Giro stage 16 is underway!

In this stage, the greatest riders will take on some of the most legendary climbs the world has to offer. The ‘queen stage’ 222km, passes across the Alps and features a double over the Stelvio. The stage starts at Rovetta (a starting stage in 2008) and the course climbs steadily over to Val Camonica. Through Malonno and then the peloton take on climb 1 –  the Mortirolo Pass (southern side), with gradients reaching 16% at the last stretch before the narrow technical descent to Grosio. The riders are then taken up by the Adda River valley before heading towards the first passage in Bormio, which is the start of the 100km circuit.

The circuit starts by climbing up the Stelvio Pass (climb 2) to an elevation of around 2766m with an average gradient of 7.4 (for the entire climb) and a maximum of 14 in places. This climb comes complete with hairpins, snow and mesmerising views all the way through to Glorenza. The route then swings back around to the Umbrail Pass (climb 3) in Switzerland.

Afterwards, another technical descent to Bormio, Bormio is a stage town at the Giro which has appeared 14 times before. Then the final 20km is virtually downhill. The riders take a U-turn and the road starts to level out. The race ends with a 100m long asphalt home stretch.

Good Luck riders!
